BIO

I am a neuroscientist with a primary interest in the neuronal basis of consciousness and its modulation by anesthetic agents. With continuous funding by the NIGMS as principal investigator, I have been studying anesthetic mechanisms using various methods of experimental electrophysiology and human neuroimaging. During my research, I have gained national and international recognition, published over 180 articles, 10 book chapters and edited three books. I have held offices and presidency in various scientific societies and have been a member of journal editorial boards. I have been invited to give institutional seminars, plenary, and keynote presentations at major national and international scientific conferences more than 50 times. I have organized two international conferences: the 25th Annual Meeting of the International Society on Oxygen Transport to Tissue, Milwaukee, WI, 1997, and the 8th International Symposium on Memory and Awareness in Anesthesia, Milwaukee, WI, 2011 as well as the Edward F. Domino Lecture, Ann Arbor, MI, 2023 and Center for Consciousness Science Symposium, Ann Arbor, MI, 2023, at the University of Michigan. Currently, I am Professor of Anesthesiology, Director of the Center for Consciousness Science, Director of Laboratory Science, and Executive Director of Neuroscience Research in the Department of Anesthesiology, University of Michigan. I have served as reviewer of grant applications for the NIH and the NSF. My work has been featured in numerous media outlets.
